top performance with the most sought after features
This grinder has all the best specs and all the right features for a single-dosing grinder–vertical 64mm burr set with pre-breaker auger, low retention design, smooth stepless adjustment with 5micron markings, anti-static device, 400w brushless DC (silent) motor, variable rpm with wide range. By features it ought to be the most highly rated single dosing grinder on the market. The surprise is the real life function as performance is even better than you’d expect from the specs.Taste: fluffy grounds, great tasting espresso with the stock Orion burrs. So nice I haven’t been tempted to install SSP HU or Lab Sweet burrs as I’ve been really enjoying results from the Orion burrs.Workflowt: the anti-static mechanism must be working well because this is the cleanest, neatest grinder I’ve used with the least retention. I fill straight into the portafilter, using an ordinary bent steel portafilter holder, and all the grounds fall straight into the basket. It’s so nice not to deal with a bellows–I just pat my open palm a couple times on top of the funnel when grinding is finished, and don’t see any retention from grind to grind.Noise: Very quiet operation, nearly silent when running until you put beans in, so the motor is adding nothing to the sound level. I’ve heard there are quieter grinders, but this is by far the most quiet grinder I’ve used.Ease: easy to open and clean, easy to change burrs, easy to adjust grind fineness. I don’t use the cup with the scale but if that’s your workflow, then it’s easy to weigh the beans before and the grounds after.Compact: easy to fit under cabinets.Watching a Lance Hedrick youtube grinder roundup review is how I learned about this Gevi grinder. His vid didn’t include a detailed review but he said it was a really well-done grinder, was giving great results, and had all the best features and he gave it top marks. He was reviewing an early version Gevi were calling the Grindmaster with a GoFundMe approach and apparently their rollout was disastrous with extreme late delivery, failure to deliver, and some failing feature for the machines people did finally get. Most people wrote off the grindmaster and it was briefly infamous within this super-trendy Reddit world of home single-dosing espresso. So here it is a couple years later and I was surprised to see this VelPro 400 looking like Gevi’s revival of what Lance was calling a top A+ grinder before it had all its problems. They must have solved whatever quality issues they had because mine has been flawless for hundreds and hundreds of grinds. Gevi may have changed how the adjustment knob feels because mine turns very smoothly, easy to adjust but stays adjusted. Lance Hedrick’s review had said the adjustment knob had a metal-on-metal feel which he found annoying, but the current version seems to have fixed that. The other thing that annoyed Lance was the magnetic dosing cup with built-in scale which he said raised the cost for a feature he did not find useful. Though it is cool and it works, I don’t use it because I grind into the portafilter and weigh beans on an Acaia scale. When this machine was being rolled out as the Grindmaster, it was in the $900 grinder category, so now the same machine at $599 seems like an unmissable deal on a quality grinder with top performance and the most sought after features.
